Victoria police hunt suspect in violent early-morning attempted robbery

Victoria man, 20, fights off knife-wielding attacker in Burnside-Gorge neighbourhood

A 20-year-old Victoria man is lucky to have escaped with only superficial injuries after he was attacked by a knife-wielding thief this morning.

At 6:50 a.m., the man was walking near the intersection of Manchester Road and Sumas Street in Victoria's Burnside-Gorge neighbourhood when another man jumped out of the bushes and demanded money.

"Instinctively, the victim kicked the suspect back into the bushes, but the (suspect) got up and a struggle ensued," said VicPD Const. Mike Russell.

The victim received superficial cuts before the attacker ran away empty-handed, Russell said. A VicPD K-9 unit and forensics team then scoured the area to no avail.

The suspect is thought to be between 40 to 50 years old, 5-foot-8 with a stocky build, grey moustache and grey hair. At the time of the attack, the suspect was wearing a grey sweatshirt and a white baseball cap covered with dried paint.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call VicPD on the non-emergency line at 250-995-7654 or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
