An equipment breakdown at the region’s primary sorting facility for recyclable materials, Cascades Recovery, has led to a temporary suspension of commercial recycling pickup in the Capital Regional District.
Recycle BC and Emterra have implemented a contingency plan to ensure curbside blue box pickup remains operational despite the challenge, according to a CRD press release Wednesday (Jan. 19).
Recycle BC is responsible for paper and packaging recycling in the province and Emterra is the contractor responsible for collecting these materials within the CRD.
Hartland landfill staff will not be rejecting garbage loads containing recyclable materials during this temporary commercial recycling suspension, however, these loads are still subject to fines according to CRD bylaw 3881 which does not allow the disposal of recyclable items.
Since November 2021 the recycling industry in Greater Victoria has faced ongoing issues due to severe weather, labour shortage and supply chain issues.
Residents and businesses are encouraged by the CRD to consider where they can limit their packaging consumption and to reuse as much as possible.
