After a slow start, the Camosun Chargers found their game and beat Columbia Bible College three games to two in the PACWEST women's volleyball championships Thursday at Capilano College in North Vancouver.
The Chargers went 8-25, 25-20 and 17-25 to fall behind after three sets, but rallied to beat the Bearcats 25-20 and 15-9 in the final two games to advance to today's (Feb. 21) semifinals. Setter Kelsey Clarke (Delta, B.C.) was named player of the match for Camosun.
The Chargers, who finished fourth in league play, meet No. 1 Vancouver Island University Mariners today at 6 p.m. The Mariners dominated this season, going 22-2 overall, while the Chargers posted a 12-12 record.
This week's PACWEST award winners saw Camosun leftside Hilary Graham (Courtenay) named to the first all-star team, while fellow leftside Kaelyn Parmelee (Vernon) earned a nod for the all-rookie team.
The Chargers men, who automatically qualified for today's semifinals with their second-place finish (15-9 in PACWEST), take on the Douglas College Royals at 3 p.m. The Royals, who wound up third at 13-11, beat VIU 3-2 in yesterday's quarter-final match.
The Chargers men are led by first team all-star middle Alex Sadowski (Belmont secondary), second-teamers power Alex Wolf (Surrey) and setter Vitor Macedo (Rio de Janeiro) – last week's PACWEST men's player of the week – and all-rookie team leftside Cameron Fennema (Pacific Christian).
The bronze and gold medal matches happen Saturday at Capilano.
