In a power shift among high school boys’ AA rugby, the rough and tumble Esquimalt Dockers have officially given way to the up-and-coming Glenlyon Norfolk School Gryphons.
GNS defended its 2010 Colonel Hodgkins cup win as the city AA champions with a 71-0 drubbing of the Dockers on Monday.
“We’ve punched our ticket to AA provincials. Unfortunately it was a bit of a mismatch,” said Gryphons manager Frank Stanley.
For the Dockers there was one more shot at provincials, a challenge game yesterday versus Ladysmith at a neutral site (either Shawnigan Lake school or Brentwood College). Check www.vicnews.com for results.
Gryphons’ fly half Fergus Hall had a strong game organizing his team while captain Hamish Bodnar, was solid at No. 8.
Speedy GNS student Gabe Mullin, an accomplished hockey and soccer player, made an electric debut for the Gryphons on Monday. A late arrival to the team, Mullin tallied a hat trick of tries despite it being his first rugby game in years.
GNS await their opponent for round one of the provincials, May 28. The next round happens in June.
