HIGH SCHOOL RUGBY: St. Michaels University to host super Saturday

Oak Bay VS SMUS Rugby Final 1
St. Michaels University Blue Jag Goven Sandhu holds Oak Bay’s Luke Campbell just inches from a try during the Howard Russell AAA city final at Oak Bay

In perhaps the biggest rivalry of all rugby in Victoria, 2011 went to the Oak Bay Barbarians over the St. Michaels University School Blue Jags.

The 'Barbs took the city AAA final 43-25 at home on May 19, adding the Howard Russell Cup to the Gareth Rees Boot trophy won at UVic to the start of the season.

Oak Bay coach Murray Allen credited SMUS for a much-improved game, better than their earlier meetings this season, all won by Oak Bay.

Centre Joe Eehrlic scored a try for SMUS and "gave Oak Bay fits all over the field," Allen said.

Thomas Mirmotahari scored two tries for Oak Bay with Kimia Hamidi converting four.

Oak Bay will face Argyle and SMUS will face Robert Batemen in the first round of AAA playoffs, held at SMUS Saturday.

Times to be announced.

Earlier on May 19 the Esquimalt Docker's season ended with a 29-0 loss to Ladysmith in a AA playoff challenge game.

The Glenlyon Norfolk School Gryphons play Sir Charles Tupper in round one of the AA playoffs this week.
